Spring Track Sign-Ups and Meeting

The Rams would need a sub 50-second anchor in the 4x400 to hold off the Patriots in an incredible dual meet.

The excitement started with a come from behind win by the Patriots in the 4x800-meter relay. After a strong performance by senior Patrick Kleemeier (PR of 2:05.94), senior Luke Gormley (2:13.21), and junior Joe Sims (PR of 2:04.70), sophomore Mike Steitz overcame his competitor in the final 100 meters to run a three-second PR of 2:00.99! The excitement continued with a victory by junior Josh Daniels in the 1600 (PR of 4:52.83) and a third-place finish by freshman Dylan Borden (PR of 4:54.66). The Patriots also went one-two in the 400 with senior Joey Mignon clocking a 53.01 to win it; followed closely by Sims with a PR of 54.04.

Senior captain Nik Ventura again scored in four events and also had a PR in three! Ventura was first in the 300 hurdles with a PR of 41.93 and first in the 110-meter high hurdles with another PR of 16.48. Against some of the best jumpers in the league, Ventura secured two second place finishes with a PR of 20’4.25” in the long jump and a leap of 41’3.5” in the triple jump.

Senior captain Evan Clark won the pole vault with a jump of 10’0”, scored in the 100 (11.61) and the 200 (23.34), and a personal best of 51.90 as the anchor of the 400. Senior captain Noah Wilson earned an upset victory in the shot put with a PR of 42’8.5” while senior Matt Patrick took first in the javelin with a PR of 117’8”.

The Patriots took full advantage of their chance to compete at the new Crawford Stadium at the 2nd annual North Penn Open this past Saturday, capturing four medals and over twenty personal records!

In the first track event of the day, the 4x800-meter relay earned a silver medal. As leadoff, junior Joe Sims flew out of the gate and held on for a personal best of 2:05.76. Next up, sophomore Mike Steitz clocked a personal best of 2:04.65 followed by senior Patrick Kleemeier, who earned a personal best of 2:08.63. To close out the team effort, junior anchor Josh Daniels battled with Coatesville all the way to the line and clocked a strong 2:04.2. The team total of 8:23.60 is the best for the relay to date. Meanwhile, the senior captains were busy collecting their own precious medals in the jumping pits. Evan Clark went home with the gold in the pole vault by clearing 11’0”. Nik Ventura earned a bronze in the triple jump with a personal best of 42’10”. And, right after the jumping concluded, Nik rushed to the track to snag a bronze in the 300-meter hurdles with a 43.01.

The younger hurdlers followed suit too with all of them earning a personal record in every hurdle even they competed. In the 300, freshmen Tommy Donnelly and Brady Rodgers improved by over four seconds from their debuts with a 46.97 and 47.40 respectively. In the 110-meter high hurdles, Donnelly ran 20.91 while freshmen Jacob Dozor and Gavin Cherry ran 22.32 and 22.93.

On the distance side, the milers were on fire. Senior Cole Kochan led the way with a strong kick on the last lap and a personal record of 4:53.78. Junior James Sexton was close behind with a personal best of 4:53.87. In his second race of the day, Kleemeier clocked a personal best of 5:05.14. And senior Matt Saks clocked his own personal best of 5:14.83. Then, in the open 800, senior Luke Gormley had his best race of the season with a three-second personal best of 2:11.74. Freshman Dylan Borden made quite the debut with a personal best of 2:12.96. Senior Sam Ruch battled for his own personal best of 2:20.49.

The remaining sprinters continued to make progress too. Freshman Nate Merena not only competed in a 4x100-meter relay, but also ran a personal best of 26.49 in the 200. Seniors Liam Sharkey (25.11) and Joey Mignon (24.07) earned their own personal records as well. Additionally, freshman Jacob Kogan ran a personal record of 13.28 and freshman Edan Wong ran a personal record of 13.69. And Steitz, in his second race of the day, ran a new best of 52.28 in the 400.

In the fields outside the stadium, sophomore Jacob Tannenbaum finished 5th overall with a discus launch of 113’0”. Seniors Noah Wilson and Matt Patrick threw 86’9” and 82’6” respectively. In the shotput, Wilson was the top thrower on the team with a 39’7” and Tannenbaum was close behind with a 38’3”. To wrap up the field events, Patrick recorded a throw of 111’4” in the javelin and Tannenbaum tacked on a toss of 83’6”.

Battling the windy, cold conditions, the Patriots lost a tough opening dual meet to CB South by a score of 80-70. Despite the loss, the team had several highlights to celebrate, especially in the field and distance events.

In the throws, senior captain Noah Wilson took first in the shot put with a throw of 40’2.5” while sophomore Jacob Tannenbaum took second with a personal record of 39’0.75”. Seniors Conor Meyers (36’9.75”) and Matt Patrick (35’1.5”) also set PRs in the event. Tannenbaum later took first in the discus with a PR of 117’7” with Wilson taking third with a PR of 110’0’. Meyers added another PR with a throw of 95’3”. Patrick and Meyers went two-three in the javelin with throws of 109’4” and 105’4” respectively. Tannenbaum has his third PR of the day in the event with a throw of 83’3”. Sophomore Sam Lauro also had a PR of over 20 feet when he launched the discus 81’11”.

Senior captain Nik Ventura led the way in the horizontal jumps with a first-place finish in the triple jump (40’10.5”) and a second-place finish in the long jump (19’8.25”). Senior captain Evan Clark led the way in the pole vault with a first-place finish (10’6”) while sophomore Zach Mancini captured third (9’6”). On the track, Ventura and Clark were key contributors again. Ventura capped off a monster day with wins in the 300-hurdles (45.84) and the 110-hurdles (16.92). Clark had two second-place finishes in the 100 (11.59) and the 200 (23.89).

The distance runners were led by a 1-2-3 finish in the 1600. Running a smart, controlled race, the trio of junior Josh Daniels, freshman Dylan Borden, and junior James Sexton pulled away in the final lap to earn all nine points for the team. In the 3200, Daniels, who was making his debut in the event, finished second with a 11:00.01 and was joined by senior captain Cole Kochan who ran a 11:02.15 to finish third.
